So the scene was set- a beautiful old Parktonian house, a view confirming that
Johannesburg as a city has the highest number of trees, virgin cocktails on
arrival or hot Illy coffee, tea to get our cold bodies warm and the hues of
pink roses and sweet peas delighted my senses.
It was the day to honour 16 woman doing extraordinary work in 4 different
categories. Welcome to the Feather Awards.
I found an article called ‘The mystical messenger’ all about Feathers (
renaissance magazine Nov 2007). According to the author Jodi-Anne Williams the
native Americans believe that “feathers are a symbol of not only flight but also
of spiritual strength.” She goes on to describe how in Egyptian mythology the
feather is a symbol of truth and order.
The spirit in the room was so positive and tangible and even amongst the
finalists there was a genuine sense of goodwill. Each and every one of the
Finalists deserved to be there: all of us have made significant contributions in
companies, communities and ultimately adding to this wonderful country . Lots
of us have have set records, won accolades, made headlines and all of us have
made a difference. As the winner of the category Arts, Culture and Heritage, I
want to thank the judges, sponsors and of course Tanya for driving this
initiative.
What an honour to take this award forward into my work.
